Newly Registered Friendly Society to Focus on Supporting Families

The Friendly Societies Division, under the purview of the Ministry of Youth Development and National Service, announced a new society on Wednesday 21st, February 2024. Ann Retess, President of the Supporting Young Parents Association Friendly Society, was presented with the Certificate of Registration at the Office of the Registrar of Friendly Societies Division Office on Duke Street, Port of Spain.

“The Supporting Young Parents Association Friendly Society is significant to communities as it focuses on building stronger families in society by closing the gap of illiteracy among youth, so they can reach their fullest potential. In terms of the benefit to parents, we will establish an Employment Support Program, where parents who are not gainfully employed with business ideas will be assisted, as well as, providing Parenting Workshop through emotional counselling and prayers,” shared Ms. Ann Retess, President of the Supporting Young Parents Association Friendly Society.

Michael Seales, Registrar Friendly Society Division stated, “Traditionally Friendly Society are fraternal orders, with an essence of a religious set up, but the Parents Association Friendly Society focus is anchored in social issues, engaging people in society, particularly young parents.” Seales added, “This is a new direction for the Friendly Society Division, not having had any Friendly Society in the past with the strategic focus on not only young persons but also for young parents, who need the support.” Seales pledged the support of the Registrar and welcomed and congratulated them on the establishment.

The Supporting Young Parents Association Friendly Society has a membership of thirty-five persons and hosts monthly meetings at their office located at the Corner of High and King Streets, Princes Town. Persons interested in becoming a member can contact Ann Retess at 720-0577.

Friendly Societies have been in existence in Trinidad and Tobago since the early 19th century. These societies offer assistance offer assistance to members of communities for healthcare, general welfare and provide opportunities for savings, medical plans, land acquisition, loans and much more.

The Ministry of Youth Development and National Service remains committed to bringing all stakeholders together to promote youth development and encouraging civic-minded citizens to contribute to the National Service of Trinidad and Tobago.
