Youth Caravan Brings Opportunities to Young People of POS and Environs

The Honourable Foster Cummings, Minister of Youth Development and National Service (centre) is presented with products from an entrepreneur at the Youth Career and Education Caravan. Minister Cummings is flanked by the Honourable Adrian Leonce, Member of Parliament for Laventille East/Morvant and Minister in the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development and the Honourable Keith Scotland, Member of Parliament for Port of Spain, South.

The Brian Lara Promenade, Port-of-Spain was abuzz with young people interested in accessing programmes and services tailored for youth. The Ministry of Youth Development and National Service (MYDNS) hosted its first Youth Career and Education Caravan (YCEC) on Saturday 25th March, 2023. The Port-of-Spain edition welcomed young people from the nearby communities of Port of Spain, Belmont, Laventille and Morvant.

“I am so happy to see all these young people taking advantage of what the Government has for them. We are very happy that as a government, to make opportunities available to youth in Agriculture, Entrepreneurship, Skills Training and more. We are supported by the Ministries of Labour, Agriculture, Education, Health and others and we continue to use a whole-of-government approach to provide opportunities for our young people,” said the Honourable Foster Cummings, Minister of Youth Development and National Service after touring the booths on Saturday.

Also present was the Honourable Adrian Leonce, Member of Parliament for Laventille East/Morvant who was excited for the prospects being offered, “I must give thanks to Minister Cummings and the Ministry for bringing opportunities for youngsters in Port-of-Spain.
In particular, the Youth Agricultural Homestead Programme – which has made a paradigm shift by creating a new reality for young people who would not have access to land. Another agricultural activity by the Youth Ministry is the Shade House Project which brings technology into agriculture. With all these programmes and more on display, I am very happy to have this in my area.”

The Youth Career and Education Caravan is designed showcase youth-focused opportunities and resources from Ministries, State Agencies and the Private Sector that will advance the personal and professional development of young people. At each community, a mobile caravan will traverse through the streets of the neighbouring areas encouraging persons to visit the career fair and take full advantage of the opportunities being offered to young persons. The YCEC also boast of an entrepreneurship village proudly supported by the National Entrepreneurship Development Company Limited (NEDCO) – an agency of the MYDNS.

Booth Holders included representatives from the Ministry of Youth Development and National Service’s Youth Affairs Division; Civilian Conservation Corps; Co-operative Development Division; Youth Agricultural Homestead Programme (YAHP), Youth Agricultural Shade House Programme among others. Partner Ministries and agencies included: the Community-Based Environmental Protection and Enhancement Centre, On-the-Job Training Programme; Sport Division; the National Library and Information System Authority; University of Trinidad and Tobago and several others.

The Youth Career and Education Caravan will continue between March and June in various communities from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

  • Saturday 6th May, 2023 African Grounds – Enterprise
  • Saturday 20th May, 2023 Fanny Village Grounds – Point Fortin
  • Saturday 3rd June, 2023 Phase V Grounds – La Horquetta
